Kickoff

Hello! Megan here to start the Food Tour 2K15 official blog.

Today, Catherine and I kicked off our food tour. We planned on an easy transition into our tour, knowing that we had an endless amount of food, mostly desserts, ahead of us. We headed off into Northport intending to go to a tea shop and a frozen custard place. Well, this plan failed us. As we drove down Main Street, we passed the tea shop and it had a closed sign on the door.

"Oh well," we thought.
"Damn it," we said.

Onto the frozen custard store! As we approached, Catherine brought up a good point that it looked dark. Slowly driving by, we spotted another closed sign. This time, the store was closed for the whole week due to repairs. We pulled into a parking lot, feeling dejected because the only two places we wanted to go to in town were closed. What were the odds of that? We drove away nearly speechless, hating Northport.

Not wanting to give up on Food Tour 2K15, we decided to continue on our journey to Huntington. For two dessert-loving people like ourselves, Huntington is a mecca. Mainly, it is where you can get the best macarons on Long Island, and Catherine has been to Paris so you know that it is legit. But macarons are for another day.

We had previously planned on hitting up a lot of places in Huntington all in one day, but seeing as it was late afternoon and Northport had failed us, we chose only to go to a couple of them, thus breaking up our food tour into two Huntington days.

We swung by Sweetie's Candy Cottage, which is a small little pink, yellow, and green house-like structure. Inside they have many delectable chocolate candies. We stood at the counter for a few moments trying to figure out what we were in the mood for. I explained to Catherine today that restraint is the key to Food Tour 2K15. If we want to go to numerous places, we have to restrain ourselves at each one. We cannot eat all the food. We just can't. And to be honest, that might be rather unfortunate but the human body is flawed. What can I say?

Anyway, the girl behind the counter seemed to think it was odd we were taking our time. She kept trying to get us to order quickly, even though there was no one else in the store. She was nice though. There were just too many options!

We decided on a chocolate and peanut butter chip covered pretzel, a chocolate covered Reese's Oreo with PB chips and mini Reese's Pieces on top, individual mini chocolate cups, and a "better than a cupcake" peanut butter concoction. We realized afterwards that we had a peanut butter theme going on.

The verdict(s)? The pretzel was delicious, as was the Oreo. We were divided on the mini chocolate cups. I got the chocolate chip cookie cup, which unexpectedly had toffee in it. I'm not a big toffee fan because it's sticky and hard to eat, and I am protective of my teeth, but it was okay. Catherine quite enjoyed her smores cup, which was complete with a little graham cracker. The item we both did not enjoy very much was the thing described as better than a cupcake. It was supposed to be two cookies with frosting and chocolate, or something, but we couldn't really tell what it was. Our advice? Just get a cupcake.

We headed off to Chip 'n' Dipped, a cookie store that also turns out to be a chocolatier and candy store. We did not know this. At first I was worried they didn't sell cookies. When you first walk into the store, you are met with a chocolatier making fresh chocolates and a long display case filled with candies.

Well, we actually wound up wishing that they offered more cookies. There were two options, hot and fresh cookies or packaged cookies that offered more variety. Obviously we needed the hot ones. We picked out four basic flavored cookies. There were limited flavors for the hot cookies, so we chose chocolate chip, double chocolate, white chocolate macadamia nut, and oatmeal raisin. They were good, the melted chocolate chips were a nice touch, but perhaps not good enough to warrant a return trip. At least, not for the cookies. Who knows what could happen in Food Tour 2K15? We might wind up going back to try out the candy.

Signing off.
